A Social Capital Primer
My article introducing the concept of social capital, paving the way for future discussions about how it is or is not used within the trans-community.
Day of Remembrance
On January 3rd, 2007, I was eating good steak. A filet mignon with avocado patte and sauteed chanterelle mushrooms. It was amazing, especially the avocado spread, which I wouuld never have imagined would go so well with a medium-rare piece of beef. I remember this day because it was my birthday, and I always eat steak on my birthday. The Chop House in Ann Arbor is probably the best steak house in Michigan - a single meal easily runs upwards of a hundred dollars, and that’s if you’re being conservative - and on the anniversary of the day you were born, you eat for free there. It’s a tradition for me and my friends now…instead of buying gifts for each other, we treat ourselves to The Chop House so the birthday person doesn’t have to eat alone, and on this particular day Beth, Angela, Eric, Amanda, Matt, and Janet were there with me. My best friends in the world. It was a very good day.
On the same day, in Washinton D.C., Diamond Person was murdered by her live-in boyfriend, Preston Logan. Logan repeatedly struck Person with a hammer and when that didn’t do the trick, he strangled and then suffocated her with a plastic trash bag. Diamond, as you might have guessed, was transgendered.
Logan would turn himself over to the police a few days later, and in February accepted a plea agreement, peading guilty to second degree murder. He was sentenced to 26 years in jail…nearly the maximum for second degree murder.
That happened on my birthday, maybe at the very same time I was eating filet mignon.
